The poem, ‘Man from Snowy River’ was published during the colonial period of Australia in 1890. The poem illustrates various aspects of the Australian life during this period. For example, we are able to see the lifestyle of the bushmen. Clancy and Harrison are shown to be very good horse riders who love their horses and have pride in what they do. The poem shows that riding horses and taking care of the horses is a lifestyle that bushmen enjoy. The pride of the horsemen can be understood with the introduction of the Man from Snowy River. Harrison, who is the oldest bushman in the poem, thinks that the Man from Snowy River will not be able to ride with the other professional horsemen because the man and his horse are too small. On the other hand, Clancy believes that the man and his horse can ride with the other horsemen. This shows that they have very strong opinions about horse riding and they have very strong opinions which shows their knowledge and passion about horses and the mountains.
Furthermore, in this poem, the nature during this period is also captured by the poet. Throughout the poem, we can see how nature gives people challenges and how people must overcome these challenges. The nature is very raw and is not touched by people. This shows the real natural qualities of nature and shows how beautiful nature is.
Finally, the poem also shows the close relationship between people during this period. The town is small so everyone must come together and support each other. When the horse goes missing, every horsemen come to join. This shows a very strong community. Also, it is because of this caring nature in relationships that the Man from Snowy River is able to find the horse, old Regret. If Clancy had not given him the chance, the Man from Snowy River would never have become a household name.
